Stressing sequence of steel cable-stayed bridges built by cantilevering
2015
The construction of cable-stayed bridges by cantilevering implies several changes of geometry, stress and strain patterns during the assemblage of segments. The main target to be satisfied in the construction process is the achievement of the required final geometry and of a convenient state of stress for self-weight and sustained loads. The sequence of stay stressing and the values of prestressing forces at each stage of segment assembling have the main role for reaching the desired result of design, due to the large redundancy of cable-stayed structures.Among the different procedures proposed in the literature for initial cable force determination, the Partial Elastic Scheme (PES) Method …
Afternotes on PHM: Harmonic ENO Methods
2003
PHM methods have been used successfully as reconstruction procedures to design high-order Riemann solvers for nonlinear scalar and systems of conservation laws, (see [8], [1], [4]). We introduce a new class of polynomial reconstruction procedures based on the harmonic mean of the absolute values of finite diferences used as difference-limiter, following the original idea used before to design the piecewise hyperbolic method, introduced in [8]. We call those methods ’harmonic ENO methods’, (HENO). Furthermore, we give analytical and numerical evidence of the good behavior of these methods used as reconstruction procedures for the numerical approximation by means of shock-capturing methods fo…
3D Map Computation from Historical Stereo Photographs of Florence
2018
The analysis of early photographic sources is fundamental for documenting and understanding the evolution of a city so rich in history and art as Florence. Indeed, by the 1860s several photographers used to work in town, and their images (often obtained through stereoscopic set-ups) can help us to reconstruct Florence in 3D as it was by the time of the Italian unification. The first and most delicate part of such reconstruction process is the computation of disparity maps from the historical stereo pairs. This is a very challenging task for fully-automatic computer vision algorithms, since XIX century photographs are affected by several problems—ranging from superficial damages to asynchron…
Clandestini a Lampedusa:isolati, segregati, invisibili
2006
Social construction processes of migrant, often clandestine migrant, among the inhabitants of Lampedusa, have recorded, in the last years, a gradual moving from a prevaling sympathetic optics combined with human solidarity forms – even if not without defensive processes and forms of racism and xenophobia – to more and more clear dynamics of exclusion, often joint with intolerant, cynical and indifferent attitudes. The social representation of the stranger isn’t, however, either unvarying or coherent. Infact, the collected interviews give evidence for continuous oscillations between the wish to understand – that increases when there is an interaction with the strangers – and the need to defe…
Conoscenza, conservazione, valorizzazione: criticità, processi e approccio unitario
2014
2020
After the patrimonial destruction that took place during the Civil War of 1936-1939 in the city of Cartagena, religious art and especially sacred sculpture, is greatly affected. The artistic expressions that the Passionist entities took to the streets on the days of Holy Week, disappear almost in their entirety, having to start a tremendously costly reconstruction process in order to alleviate the losses suffered. The Cofradía California commissioned the renovation of its sculptural patrimony heritage, which came to replace the wealth of the works of Salzillo, to the Valencian artist Mariano Benlliure Gil. All this process is the one studied in this article, keeping in mind the different bi…
